In response to the federal government shutdown, TXCPA is committed to
keeping you informed and supported throughout any disruptions that may affect tax
administration, IRS operations, or your practice.
What You Need to Know:
- IRS Operations: (Oct. 7) As the U.S. government shutdown entered its second week, the IRS announced it would furlough nearly half of its workforce, closing most operations due to a lapse in funding. According to its updated contingency plan, 53.6% of employees—primarily those in public-facing roles—will continue working to prepare for the 2026 tax season and implement H.R. 1. Taxpayer Services will retain over 24,000 staff, including 3,500 new customer service representatives who must remain in training to be ready for the upcoming filing season.
- Advocacy: AICPA and TXCPA continue to advocate for plans that minimize
disruption, including keeping online systems accessible, providing automatic
extensions for notices and collections, and retaining more staff to support
taxpayers and practitioners. - Member Support: TXCPA is here to help you stay informed, advocate for
your interests, and provide the resources you need to serve your clients and
community. We will monitor the situation closely and communicate timely
updates as they are made available.
